Almost in a pickle

So...the pickling plan.

The recipe calls for Pickling Lime.

Welcome to Delaware, the land where apparently NO ONE CANS. I drove to 3 different stores with no luck in finding Pickling Lime. And when I asked customer service, all I got was empty stares and, "I've never even heard of that."
Which was somewhat devistating considering I am making Sweet LIME Pickles.

And then I decided to drive over the line into Maryland. Because maybe it's a southern thing. And they do things a little more Southern over there...maybe they are more apt to have Pickling Lime.

I walked into Food Lion, praying that I was correct in my assumption.

And don't you know...there in the spice aisle...

I almost burst into tears! Pretty sure I shouted, "Praise JESUS"...

Luckily, I was in Maryland, so not even one person stopped to look at me.

Latest and Greatest

Not sure if I mentioned it or not, but thanks to my blog buddy, Ceej, I welcomed a wide variety of free veggies into my home this week. And just in case you are wondering what I am doing with them, I decided to blog about it.

We have already eated half the head of cabbage. I sautéed it with turkey sausage and Rotel Tomatoes and a little bit of Old Bay for kicks and giggles. MMMMMM….Who knew cabbage was so delicious?

But now on to the cucumbers.

I have decided to pickle them. Yummy. Nothing is quite so good as my Nanny’s Lime Pickles, and the thought that I could actually make them in my own home makes me almost euphoric.

I started this morning....

Look at those babies.

And they are even prettier chopped up.

Wait, did someone say "Pickles"?!

And poor Gizmo has to wait for his turn when Pickles is around....

But back to the veggies at hand.... I did some searching and it looks like you can pickle white cucumbers, as well. So I am going to try my hand with them.

And they are almost as pretty, don't you think?

Now, on to the bigger stuff. But that's obviously a weekend project. So until then.

In the meantime, what on earth should I do with these babies? Any ideas?

Top Ten Reasons it’s great to be married to Techy

1. He makes beautiful babies. Or babY, WHATEVER. Techy would have everyone possible know that he won a baby contest as a baby. Therefore, our baby should win a baby contest as well. (And he has entered him in every contest possible – shamelessly. Interested in voting for the most recent one? Go to the Gerber webpage and search for Connor in Newark and then vote) *shameless plug from Techy*
But all personal preferences aside, Little Man really is an adorable baby. And he looks just like his daddy. Therefore, Techy gets all the credit for the pretty baby. And I get credit for the greenhousing of the little guy.

2. He knows a lot about a lot.
Techy makes no bones about his immense knowledge base. As a kid, his favorite reading subjects were medical journals and weather journals. When he was in the 2nd grade he wrote a program on his classroom’s computer to lock out all the other kids, leaving him as the only one with access to play on it.
Which leads me to #3.

3. He’s handy with computers.
Techy is one of the handiest computer goo-roo’s I know. Really. But then again, I don’t know that many. He, he. No really, I count myself lucky to have my own computer technician living right at home with me. It’s quite convenient, actually.
He’s actually made a living playing with computers for about 5 years now. And you know what? He LOVES his job. I have never seen anyone so in love with their job. Leading me to number 4.

4. He’s a very hard working guy.
Techy has always said that when it comes to providing for our family, he would rather go work in a grocery store bagging groceries than make us do without. And believe me, we have gotten close a time or two. Our first year of marriage he worked at Arby’s when they needed him to pull a shift or 2.
And let’s not even talk about his 2nd job or his 3rd job , or as he calls them – his moneymaking hobbies. Leading me to number 5.

5. Techy is very frugal.
I should really use the term “tight-wad” but that really doesn’t sound nice, and since I am clearly trying to brag on my hubby, doesn’t fit the bill today. He has never been the type of guy who just goes on random spending sprees for “me” items. His money is our money and we share and share alike. He saves up for things he wants. But he isn’t so tight that he won’t spend some money on a memorable experience. For instance, last year’s cruise to the Bahama’s. We saved our money and we spent a good chunk of it on that trip. Was it worth it? Definitely. Does he regret spending the money? Not even one minute.

6. Techy is sweet.
As in sappy sweet. Snuggly. The type of guy that any girl wants. He says sweet things just because he knows I want to hear them. He loves to talk to me and he loves for me to talk to him. To be honest, he is way more romantic than I will ever be.

7. Techy is a great father.
I think I have said before how nervous I was about Techy as a dad. Not for any other reason than I had never been around Techy with kids. But then my sister had a baby. And then his sister had a baby. And it became clear that the only thing more that Techy really wanted was a baby. So we took the plunge…. And I have never seen Techy more in love than he is with this little guy. It’s amazing really. When he comes in at night, all he wants is to be with Little Man and I. It’s almost comical. “Look, we’re a family…” If I have heard him say it once I have heard him say it a thousand times. Remember the sappiness?

8. Techy is my best friend.
I always think it’s funny to hear people say that their best friend is their spouse. But in our case, we really are best friends. There is no one I would rather hang out with than my husband. We have fun together. We laugh together. We talk, we play, we daydream, we read each other’s thoughts….

9. Techy hates to argue.
Rain or shine, Techy craves peace. He is a peacemaker by nature. At times, this is a thorn in my flesh, because I really need/want him to argue back. And instead I just end up screaming at the covers he has pulled over his head.
No really. Almost every big argument we have ever been in has ended with the words, “I’m sleepy”, as he runs to get in bed and pull the covers over his head.
Leading me to number 10.

10. Techy is very forgiving.
But usually only because he is very forgetful. However, on the occasions where I end up yelling at the covers over his head, he wakes up the next morning with completely no recollection of our argument. We joke about it. He is never mad about our arguments because he rarely, if ever, remembers them.
And if he does remember an argument, he would much rather have peace than argue. So he always just sets aside the differences and works for a compromise to make everyone happy.

All that to say, I am one lucky girl.

Polyvore much?

So, I have been working on helping my sister create a battle plan for her new house. I decided to try Polyvore since it comes highly recommended by several blogs that I read.

This shows you an idea of what she wants her great room to look like.

Now, I don't know if you have used Polyvore or not, but the only problem that I have found is that even though you can pull pictures off of a webpage, you may be missing sections of the picture. You will notice that all of my fabric choices are missing their white backgrounds, which wouldn't be a problem except for I have the rug as a background for my board.

So no theory is perfect, but I still LOVE, LOVE, LOVE this. I have read about other places to do a room layout for free. And as I said before, I knew that reading these decorating blogs would do me in.

Oh well! Would love to hear any thoughts relative to the decor or the polyvore. Any info you have that I don't is valuable.

Actually, any info you have is valuable!

Man vs. Bullet

Remember when I did that Father's day post about my amazing Daddy who not only survived an attack from a gunman who had barricaded himself in his home, but managed to drag the attacker out of his house and arrest him, all while bleeding from the gunshot in his neck?

Well, today commemorates 20 years since that happened.

Thank God for the guardian angels who worked overtime to keep that bullet from hitting it's mark and for keeping my Daddy here for another 20 years.

I love you, Daddy!

Words of Encouragement...or Photos of encouragement, WHATEVER

It's been a few days since my last post, and in case you were wondering, yes, I did eat everything I could get my hands on over the holiday weekend. It was so worth it. But I exercised, too. Not enough, but I did. Just.so.you.know.

I think I have talked enough about my weight for you to know that I have a small obsession.... And I think I have talked enough about my {gorgeous} Little Man for you to know that I have good reason to have an obsession with my weight since I just had a baby....

And I think I use ellipses too much.

Also, the phrase, "so, anyway".

So anyway, over the weekend, I got a Facebook message from my friend Lisa. Lisa is newly pregnant with her little one and {obviously} is a little concerned about her situation...

"I had to tell you this! Yesterday, I was maternity clothes shopping and feeling a little large and self conscious all day. I kept asking my mom, "Should I be showing already?" Then I remembered that you had photos on your page of yourself week by week! So I went to see what you looked like at this same point (14 weeks) and how much better it made me feel. Not that you were large AT ALL, but that you were showing. So, thanks for taking those pictures, I'm sure I will continue to look at them as my belly grows too :)..."

Since I know you are going to go to Facebook and look at that 14 week pic, I will save you the trouble.

Now, for someone in my shoes, this could be taken 2 ways. I could be overly sensitive and go the whole, "Oh, great, I was so big that she feels better..." route, or I could go the "Yay! I am helping someone" route. I think, just because I am in a good mood, that I will go with option 2. I like to feel like I am helping people. Which is one of the reasons I am writing this post.

The fact is that no matter how adorable some people are pregnant, and how tiny Bethenny Frankel was pregnant, you may or may not be that person. I am not. I got really, really big.

As in, I went from this at 6 weeks

to this at 40

And despite my best efforts and my 45 minutes of exercise 3 times a week as the doctor recommended, I gained 60 lbs with Little Man.

And I am working hard to get it off, but the fact remains:

WE ARE NOT ALL MEANT TO BE TINY PREGNANT WOMEN

I don't know where we all have come up with the idea that we are supposed to be. It's pregnancy. You are growing a tiny human in there!

We are all completely different. I have a friend, Hilary, who is pregnant with her 3rd and is barely showing. My sister, Sarah, is pregnant with her 3rd, due almost exactly the same time as Hilary, and Sarah's belly is already a table top. They both look amazing, they are both carrying beautiful, healthy babies, but my sister's babies tend to be 10 pounders and Hilary is just a tiny little person.

These are all variables to consider.

Most of you know how much I HATE the way we view people in this world. I hate people being judged for their weight as much as I hate people being judged for the color of their skin. And yet there is so much pressure to fit into that perfect image. And I HATE it. I hate to hear parents tell their kids that they can't enjoy a cookie or a piece of cake because "It will make you fat". OH.MY.GOSH. PLEASE. How bout, let's forget about you being fat and talk about you being healthy, before I give you a complex and make you anorexic. How bout that!

Moral to the story:

If you are pregnant and rapidly gaining poundage, you are not alone. Do what you can to be healthy. Enjoy your pregnancy {as much as you can}. Take care of yourself and your baby. But forget about the weight. And stop comparing yourself to someone else. God is using you as a little greenhouse to grow a beautiful baby in. Enjoy whatever shape he needs that greenhouse to be.

Don't you enjoy my soapbox rants? I know I do.

Not sure what in the world is going on here, but I am pretty sure we are still feeling the repercussions of the full moon…

I am in quite the funk today. It could have to do with any number of things, but I am pretty sure it has a lot to do with stress. A LOT.

For one, my besties are leaving me for, like, ever. Everyone is on vaca this week. I am pretty bummed. No one to hang out with. Even though, I haven’t really done any hanging in a while. Too busy.

For two, I don’t think I mentioned the fact that work was stressful, right? Yeah, I know what you are thinking…. Aren’t you just a receptionist? ACTUALLY, I am the Administrative Assistant to the President SLASH Receptionist. So there. And pretty much any time anyone doesn’t know something, they call me. Not that it matters to you, but this week has been a landmark week of people calling me for random information. LANDMARK.

For three, I am driving home tomorrow with Little Man with no assistance by Techy. Now, I know you are probably really raising your eyebrows and looking down your nose at me, but Little Man just got to the point where he realizes how much fun he can have outside of the carseat and he doesn’t really enjoy the whole sleeping thing too much anymore. Ugh. Might I also mention that the normal 6 hour drive is sure to be 8 or 9 considering that it’s a holiday weekend? Um yeah, now who’s raising their eyebrows, huh?

For four, Techy has 3, count ‘em, TRES, fireworks shoots this weekend. Usually, after the first one, he is a nightmare due to lack of sleep and stress.

For, oh, I don’t know, I have lost count now, I still have to pack, do laundry, clean house, work out, and oh, yeah, I am going to see a little movie called, Eclipse tonight. Yeah, you may have heard about that? Well, I am going with like all the other Twi-mom’s in the world.

Ugh, I need a nap!
